Because of the media digitization, a large amount of infor- mation such as speech, audio and video data is produced everyday. In order to retrieve data for these databases quickly and precisely, multimedia tech- nologies for structuring and retrieving of speech, audio and video data are strongly required. In this paper, we overview the multimedia technologies such as structuring and retrieval of speech, audio an video data, speaker indexing, audio summarization and cross media retrieval existing today for RV news detabase.

A number of studies have focused on the design of continuous media, CM, (e.g., video and audio) servers to support the real-time delivery of CM objects. These systems have been deployed in local environments such as hotels, hospitals and cruise ships to support media-on-demand applications. They typically stream CM objects to the clients with the objective of minimizing the buffer space required at the client site.

Variable bit rate (VBR) compression for media streams allocates more bits to complex scenes and fewer bits to simple scenes. This results in a higher and more uniform visual and aural quality. The disadvantage of the VBR technique is that it results in bursty network traffic and uneven resource utilization when streaming media. In this study we propose an online media transmission smoothing technique that requires no a priori knowledge of the actual bit rate. It utilizes multi-level buffer thresholds at the client side that trigger feedback information sent to the server. This technique can be applied to both live captured streams and stored streams without requiring any server side pre-processing. We have implemented this scheme in our continuous media server and verified its operation across real world LAN and WAN connections. The results show smoother transmission schedules than any other previously proposed online technique.

Over the last decade research has been pursued on all aspects of streaming media. While many theoretical results have been reported in the literature, few performance results of large-scale systems have been published. In this report we specifically explore the scalability aspects of our Yima streaming media architecture in an end-to-end test environment. With Yima, it was our goal to design and implement an architecture that would scale in performance from small to large systems. Some of the design features include (1) a multi-node cluster architecture based on commodity hardware and custom software, (2) media type independence (support ranges from 500 Kb s~(-1) MPEG-4 to 45 Mb s~(-1) HDTV, at both variable and constant bitrates), (3) fine-grained online scale up/down capabilities, and (4) a client-controlled rate smoothing protocol. We briefly discuss the design and implementation of these capabilities of Yima and then thoroughly evaluate its scalability through several sets of experiments. Our results show that Yima scales linearly (within the range of our test parameters) as a function of the cluster size and also as a function of available resources such as network bandwidth and CPU performance.

A continuum electromechanical description of electrorheological materials in their solid phase is proposed. This solid phase of the suspension is obtained when an adequate electric field is applied. The main effect concerns the presence of a prestressed state and we are interested in the reversible behavior of the media under mechanical and electrical loadings in the frame of small pertubation theory. A linearization formalism is developed and the role of the prestressed state is assessed. The point of view presented here is a special case of "Elastic Dielectrics" introduced by Eringen and Maugin; it is different from the study of Klingenberg who considers the solid phase without electric field and unstressed in its initial configuration, the main effect described being electrostriction.

This paper studies effect of packet scheduling algorithms at routers on media synchronization quality in live audio and video transmission by experiment. In the experiment, we deal with four packet scheduling algorithms: First-In First- Out, Priority Queueing, Class-Based Queueing and Weighted Fair Queneing. We assess the synchronization quality of both Intra-stream and inter-stream with and without media synchro- Nization control. The paper clarifies the features of each algo- Rithm from a media synchronization point of view. A comparison Of the experimental results shows that Weighted Fair Queneing Is the most efficient packet scheduling algorithm for continuous Media among the four.

This report examines the effect of Bluetooth packet types on the media synchronization quality by experiment. Bluetooth specifies many packet types depending on the use of FEC and ARQ so that we can choose the packet type according to the quality of the radio channel. However the effect of the packet types on media synchronization quality has not been investigated sufficiently. This report assesses the media synchronization quality of the DM1 packet type and that of the DH1 packet type by experiment. In the experiment, stored audio video streams were transmitted over a Bluetooth LAN access system with simulated DSSS interference.

Distribution functions of many static transport equations are found using the Maximum Entropy Principle. The equations of constraint which contain the relevant dynamical information are simply the low-lying moments of the distributions. Systems subject to conservative forces have also been considered. In this approach, determining the solutions to the transport equations no longer requires solving a partial differential equation but instead experimentally determining the low-lying moments and potentials.
